Nelson Mandela Day Commemorated

Lusaka – This year, on 18 July, the global community marked the first commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day, proclaimed by the General Assembly in November 2009 (A/RES/64/13).  Mr. Mandela also celebrated his 92nd birthday.  As United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said, Nelson Mandela embodies the UN’s highest values. World Environment Day: Many Species, One Planet, One Future

Lusaka – The UN International Day of Peace Keepers was celebrated in Lusaka at The Cathedral of the Holy Cross where various high schools, Zambia Army, Air force, Zambia Police and Zambia National Service personnel held a joint church service. 8 Goals for Africa music video to be screened across South Africa during World Cup

Johannesburg, South Africa – Helen Clark, the chair of the UN Development Group which brings together all UN agencies working in development, today launched 8 Goals for Africa, a campaign song by eight of Africa’s best known musicians, calling for commitment to achieve the Millennium Development Goals – a set of eight internationally-agreed goals designed to reduce poverty, hunger, disease, and maternal and child deaths by 2015.

Zambia: 16th Anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide – Film Screening and Exhibition

Lusaka – The United Nations Informa-tion Centre (UNIC) Lusaka embarked on a three-day outreach tour of universities and colleges in the two pro-vincial towns (Kitwe on the Copperbelt and Kabwe in Central Province) from 6 to 8 April. The colleges and universities visited were the Mindolo Ecumenical Founda-tion (MEF), The Copperbelt University (CBU) in Kitwe and Mulun-gushi University and Nkrumah College of Education. More »
