The Third International Day of the Remembrance of the Victims of Holocaust Print E-mail

People from all walks of life joined the UN in Zambia to the Third International Day of the Remembrance of the Victims of Holocaust that took place during World War II, where people and particularly Jews where indiscriminately killed the remembrance was held at the University of Zambia Chapel.  

The United Nations Information Centre Lusaka together with United Nations Youth Association of Zambia (YUNA) hosted the third International Day of the Remembrance of the Victim of Holocaust at the University of Zambia (UNZA) Monday 28th January 2008 where a candle vigil and a local acappella group provided solemn music. A total of 154 people drawn from schools, colleges and associations within Lusaka attended the colorful ceremony.

The Zambian Government sent representatives from the Ministry of Home Affairs to witness the ceremony and deliver solidarity message from the government. The Secretary General’s speech was read by the UNIC National Information Officer, Mr. Mickie Mumba.

The Dutch Ambassador, accredited to Zambia, His Excellence Edward Middleldorp was the guest of honour to the memorial. Other invited guests included the Jewish Community in Zambia, former Zambia’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations Prof. Mwelwa Musambachime, Catholic Priest, Fr. Michael Kelly and members of the Messianic Fellowship of Zambia, Students from various schools and university and members of Youth United Nations Association of Zambia (YUNA).

 Ambassador Middleldorp urged the youth all over the world to sacrifice for a good cause and not to turn a blind eye to atrocities that are committed by those in power and youths should not be accessible to being used as weapons of terror to humanity. He recalled that that the massacre of Jews was a bad precedent that should teach human beings lessons to the future generation.
