On 5th March 2008 UNIC Lusaka in collaboration with the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) launched the INCB report for 2007 at the Drug Enforcement Commission in Lusaka.

The Government of Zambia together with United Nations Information Centre launched the 2007 International Narcotic Control Board at Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) premises. The DEC Commissioner Mr. Peter Chingaipe and National Information Officer for UNIC Mr. Mickie Mumba were guest of honour at the event.

DEC is a government wing of the Zambian Government in charge of cases related to money laundering and the misuse of drugs i.e. heroine, marijuana and other psychotropic drugs.

Mr. Chingaipe in his remarks said that his institution had a mammoth task of educating the public to go into agricultural production instead of growing cannabis that is harmful to health as it corrupts the moral fibre of the nation. He said that Zambia has been cited as one of the countries in southern Africa where the growing of cannabis is high and always growing.

He added that his institution will continue to working hard to reverse the trend. He said 2,593 people were arrested in connection with abuse of drugs last year and 1,402 were successfully prosecuted by courts of law.
